Regional USAID Staff Training Announcement

Workshop on USAID Environmental Procedures & Integrating Environmental Considerations into the Implementation of Development Programs

Bagamoyo, Tanzania · Monday 2 June—Friday 6 June 2008

For MEOs, CTOs, Activity Managers, Team Leaders, PDOs

Hosted by USAID/Tanzania
Co-sponsored by USAID/AFR/SD, USAID/EA

USAID/Tanzania, USAID/AFR/SD, and USAID/EA are excited to offer this unique opportunity for intensive training in the implementation of USAID’s mandatory environmental compliance procedures and in environmentally sound activity design and implementation. This participatory workshop will build practical skills and will permit participants to work with colleagues to examine emerging environmental compliance issues in USAID’s evolving agenda, including those encountered in the implementation of PEPFAR and PMI programs.

The target audience for this workshop includes Mission Environmental Officers (particularly those newlyappointed), CTOs, Activity Managers, Team Leaders, M&E Officers, Food for Peace Officers, and Program Officers. Priority will be given to participants from East African Missions.

This workshop’s design will be based on the previous workshop in this series (Cape Coast, Ghana, Sept 2006.) Significant time will be allocated to field work and analysis to put “classroom skills” into practice. Presentations on special topics by guest experts feature prominently. Applying environmental principles and environmental compliance throughout the life of the project will be one key focus, and current, complex and emerging issues will be another.

The site for the Workshop is the coastal town of Bagamoyo. Approximately one hour north of Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo is a famous historical site for slave and ivory trade and was traditionally a prominent entry port along East Africa. It is in this town that Christian missionaries of Tanganyika established their first mission in the 19th century and the town was the first capital of the German colonial rule. Because of its cultural and historical significance, the town is on track to be listed as a World Heritage Site. As well as it’s historical and cultural significance, Bagamoyo is just south of Saadani National Park, Tanzania’s only coastal National Park.

All training and field work will take place within the Bagamoyo area and will include activities in a diverse set of sectors, including: health facilities, malaria control, education, tourism development, and irrigation schemes.

There is no registration fee for the course itself. Participants must cover travel, accommodations, meals and incidentals.

A detailed course program and additional logistics information will be forthcoming. All those interested in registering for this course are requested to e-mail Christopher Dege at:
